Fencing Singapore (formerly known as “Amateur Fencing Association of Singapore”) was established in 1955 and saw its peak (in terms of performance) between the years of 1989 and 1993. Then came the “lean years” where Singapore only managed to get one bronze medal each out of the 1995 and 1997 SEA Games. In recent years however, Singapore fencers have improved in their performance.
From the 3 bronze medals at the 2001 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, 4 bronze medals at the 2003 Vietnam SEA Games to our first gold medal since 1989 at the 2005 Manila SEA Games where we also won 2 other bronze medals, our fencers have started to blossom. Just this year alone, our fencers have won 2 gold medals at the Commonwealth Junior Fencing Championships, 4 gold medals at the Southeast Asian Fencing Championships and our first ever medal at the Asian Junior Fencing Championships. Our fencers had represented Singapore at the Doha Asian Games 2006 after an absence of 16 years in the Games!
Not only that, the sport has also grown locally in terms of participation numbers, especially among school students. In 2006, the Singapore Schools Sports Council gave official endorsement to Fencing Singapore to organise its inaugural National Inter-School Fencing Championships. The event, which was held in Jul 2006, saw a total of 20 schools participating with 161 students across 3 age divisions. Fencing Singapore also organised the inaugural Asian Schools Fencing Championships in Aug/Sep 2006, an event supported by the North East CDC, and it was well attended by schools in Singapore.
Fencing Singapore hopes to achieve 1 medal during the 2010 Asian Games. By organising more international events and promoting the sport to more youths, it hopes to raise the profile of the sport and spur our young fencers towards higher sporting achievements in the world fencing arena.
